Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is a chronic mental condition found in children around the world. It occurs due to genetics or a central nervous system problem. According to the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary care, ADHD is prevalent in 5.3% of the children around the globe. In India, it has been reported to be 1.6-17.9%. So, the number of affected children goes as high as millions! People affected by this condition are hyperactive, inattentive, careless, and impulsive. The disorder may continue into adulthood so, it is necessary to get treated as early as possible. ADHD in children occurs more in males compared to females. However, the behavior associated is different for both genders.
The ADHD in children has three sub-divisions—
- Predominantly Hyperactive: Mostly found in males. Symptoms may include impulsive behavior and hyper-activeness.
- Predominantly inattentive: Mostly found in females. Symptoms include difficulty in concentration, carelessness, and unable to understand the important things required for daily activities.
- Combination: A person may have both the above mentioned behavioral problems. This falls under the combined ADHD type!
Some of the ADHD symptoms in children are:
- Unable to pay attention to details.
- Careless mistakes in school work.
- Not attentive when spoken directly to.
- Unable to focus on any task.
- Losing things and forgetting to do daily chores.
- Easily distracted.
- Unable to stay still.
- Running around even when told not to.
- Too Talkative.
- Interrupting when others speak
